In 2008–2009, I was a small-town pastor.
I’d grown accustomed to watching Fox News because they seemed friendly to what we called “normal” Christian values.
But when Obama was elected, Fox started screaming about the “Socialist threat” and the “godless Muslim in the White House.” I began tuning in to Glenn Beck, who claimed to expose the secret Communist agenda hiding in plain sight.
That road led me straight to the Tea Party.
At my first rally, things didn’t add up. Their “solution” wasn’t about freedom or faith — it was about handing government functions to corporations, stripping away every safeguard for ordinary people, and calling that righteousness.
Once I saw it for what it was — a corporate ploy wrapped in patriotic language — I turned on it.
I was embarrassed. I felt naïve.
And the church world blasted me when I started standing with Occupy instead.
But I was right.
Because business interests are never a factor in the Kingdom of God.
Here are 5 reasons the Republican version of Christianity is dead wrong:
(1) It worships wealth.
(2) It excuses oppression.
(3) It trades compassion for control.
(4) It sanctifies empire instead of serving the poor.
(5) It uses Jesus’ name to bless everything He condemned.
Have the courage to admit when you’ve been deceived.
Have the courage to repent — and to stand up against the lies that turned faith into a brand.
Let’s build something better.
